THIS TIME TOMORROW – 2 TIMOTHY

Date: Week of November 4, 2018
Time: Week 8
Scripture: 2 Timothy 4:1-5

Introduction Questions
  • What barriers do you see in culture, and in yourself do you see inhibiting the sharing of the gospel?
  • Background
  • Evangelism. The word sends panic or disinterest into the lives of many. As Paul wraps up his last words to Timothy, he challenges Timothy to be one who uses God’s word with effectiveness, especially in sharing the good news of the gospel.

Observation
Read through 2 Timothy 4:1-5
  • What words come to your mind as you read this section? What words trouble you?
  • Paul focuses on two things in this section. What are they?
  • Why are they important for Paul to mention to Timothy?
  • What are the five commands Paul gives to Timothy? How would rank them in order of importance? Why are they crucial?
  • What does Paul mean when he says, “in season and out of season?”

Read v3,4
  • What does Paul warn Timothy will happen? When and why will this happen?
  • From your reading, what “itching ears” teachings do you think Paul has in mind?
  • What does Paul encourage Timothy to do well?

Interpretation
  • How often do we dwell on the “future things” of Christ? How can thinking about these things impact our lives today?
  • Out of the five commands Paul gives Timothy, which ones do we struggle with the least? The most? Why do you think that is the case for you?
  • If you had to share the gospel (and we all do) are your prepared? Notice Paul doesn’t say we need to be confident, just prepared.
  • Do I view some? All? None? Of scripture as the intentional, direct word of God? Does my life reflect my view of scripture?
  • What “itching ears” teachings attracts you?
  • Am I fulfilling my ministry? Have I taken the time to discover my ministry?
